In-clinic sessions

Each patient is thoroughly assessed when they arrive for their initial visit. The assessment is carried out through traditional orthopaedic and strength testing in order to find out what muscle is not providing proper support, what impairments may be present, and how to correct these issues.

Services Provided

Active Release Technique

This is a patented soft tissue technique used by registered health care professionals in order to help break down scar tissue and remove adhesions caused by repetitive strain or injury.

Micro Point Stimulation

Micro Point Stimulation (MPS) therapy integrates the principles of acupuncture with modern neurology to provide an all-natural and holistic approach to treating the body and mind. This combination produces highly effective results for patients and practitioners.

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) uses a fine and flexible stainless-steel needle to release tight painful bands of muscle caused by an abnormally functioning nervous system.

Shift Concussion Management

Concussion Management and it’s Canada-wide network of Health Providers offers accessible, individualized and effective concussion management strategies to individuals of all ages suffering from concussion and mild traumatic brain injury.

Treatment Specialties

Active Release Technique

How does it work

ART allows the practitioner to decrease pain and relieve movement restrictions in the targeted area by mobilizing a part of the muscle that is not activated correctly. The technique involves placing the targeted muscle in a shortened position and then lengthening it under tension, which is generated by the practitioner’s hand.

The benefits

The formation of scar tissue from repetitive strain or injury can restrict the movement of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. It can also cause peripheral nerve entrapments causing pain, burning, numbness, tingling, and pins-and-needles. ART breaks down the formed scar tissue to resolve pain, restore movement, and aid in the healing process.

Micro Point Stimulation

How does it work

MPS therapy uses micro-current to sympathetically deregulate the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and fight chronic pain. The theoretical underpinnings of MPS therapy are based on combining the “therapeutic pearls” of acupuncture, osteopathy, integrative dentistry, and neural therapy with modern neurology using micro-current applications.

The benefits

Treats chronic and acute soft tissue pain, scars, and adhesions by applying concentrated micro-current impulses. These impulses are applied to trigger, motor, and acupuncture points, providing effective pain relief for a long list of medical conditions.

Intramuscular Stimulation

How does it work

Dry needling has been shown to immediately increase range of motion, decrease muscle tone, and decrease pain with musculoskeletal conditions. The suggested benefits can be seen below.

The benefits

Local Twitch Response: Dry needling can elicit a local twitch response which is an involuntary contraction of the affected muscles that are being dry needled. This response can lead to alteration in the length and tension of the muscle fibers.

Effects on Blood Flow: Sustained contraction of the taut muscle bands in trigger points might cause local ischemia and hypoxia. Dry needling causes vasodialiation in the small blood vessels leading to increased muscle blood flow and oxygenation.

Neurophysiological Effects: Dry needling may produce local and central nervous system responses to restore homeostasis at the site of the trigger point which results in reducing both the central and peripheral sensitization of pain.

Shift Concussion Management

Shift Concussion Management is rooted in evidence-based concussion assessment and rehabilitation techniques to ensure an informed and high standard-of-care for those seeking support in their recovery.

How does it work:
Shift concussion management consists of a continuum of care that commences during pre-season education. It incorporates baseline testing and follows through to post-injury management and successful return-to-play, school and/or work.

The process can be viewed below or:

A. Baseline Testing

Objective baseline testing protocols are used to track a patient’s recovery and serve as a reliable measurement for return-to-play readiness. By measuring an athlete’s “normal” level of functioning (through baseline testing in the pre-season), Healthcare Practitioners are better able to gauge the level of impairment that may exist post-injury by performing comparative testing.

Baseline testing, although lends value and objectivity, is never relied upon solely when determining return-to-play readiness. Healthcare Providers utilize an array of tools and several factors as part of their clinical decision-making process.

B. Physical Examination

The physical examination provides Healthcare Practitioners with insight into the severity of your injury, as well as specific impairments that may need to be addressed as part of an ongoing management strategy. This portion of the testing may include a combination of the following:

Computerized neuro-cognitive testing

Balance testing

Strength and coordination testing

Screening of oculomotor skills

Vestibular testing

Gait assessment

Orthopedic assessment of secondary injuries (eg. neck, back)

The assessment methods used are tailored to the immediate needs of the patient and each Healthcare Practitioner uses his or her discretion on a case-by-case basis.

C. Concussion Rehabilitation and Management

Management strategies are used to limit the amount of impairment as well as expedite recovery as much as possible. These strategies may include any one of a combination of the following and are case-dependent:

Education around the injury, individualized strategies for rest and recovery.

Specific recommendations around employment/academic demands.

Manual/Physical therapy for associated complaints (neck, whiplash).

Vestibular and ocular rehabilitation for dizziness, motion sensitivity, balance disorders, and visual complaints
